COVID-19 Respiratory Disease Syndrome: Dissecting the root cause of its severity

Hear from Alain Borczuk, MD, and Rob Schwartz, MD, PhD, both from Weill Cornell Medical College to learn about how the nCounter® Analysis System and GeoMx® Digital Spatial Profiler (DSP) were used to profile differential gene expression in lung tissue infected with SARS-CoV-2 compared to lung tissue from influenza related acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), non-viral ARDS, and normal samples. They found a consistent induction of HLA and IFN associated genes in COVID-19 samples compared to normal controls, with severe COVID-19 samples exhibiting a classic IFN-gamma response. Non-viral ARDS samples behaved similarly to samples with low amounts of COVID-19 damage but gave an alternate IFN signature. Overall the COVID-19 and ARDS samples were rather heterogenous in their expression response, while the normal samples and those with influenza infections exhibited a more homogeneous response.
