The NanoString technology was invented at the Institute for Systems Biology (ISB) in the lab of Dr. Leroy Hood in 2000. The company was spun out of the ISB in 2003 when the technology was exclusively licensed to NanoString Technologies, who developed the nCounter Analysis System.  NanoString has been selling the the nCounter Analysis System internationally since 2008.  NanoString is a privately held venture-backed company with offices in Seattle, WA and San Mateo, CA.
